Restoration Overview
Restoration Overview
Each type of restoration requires a very unique approach to materials and methods used. Unfortunately repairing masonry and doing it the right way do not always go hand in hand. When it comes to restoring a historic building or fixing poorly done modern masonry you need to be careful in selecting a masonry company that will pay attention to details and make the repairs right the first time. They should also be insured and bonded and be able to provide you with references to check their word.
Historic Restoration
Historic Restoration
Historic restoration refers to any masonry repair or reconstruction we do to older homes or buildings. Because of the nature of older masonry work, the work is more an art form than modern construction. Leveraging materials to carefully match older work is required. For example mortar mixes are very different in historic buildings and custom mortar and brick matching is required.
Modern Restoration
Modern Restoration
Unfortunately in modern times we do everything faster, including building homes. During the real estate boom there was a high demand for masonry services but a lack of experienced masons to do the work. Builders and homebuyers were therefore left vulnerable to inexperience contractors performing masonry work without the expertise to do the job correctly. Now there are many homes in need of inspection and often times repair. Premier Masonry has extensive experience inspecting these issues and repairing or rebuilding sub-standard work that requires special attention to fix.
Industrial Restoration
Industrial Restoration
Commercial and industrial restoration refers to work where buildings have been damaged during the course of business. From construction equipment knocking down walls to prolonged exposure to extreme temperature shifts, industrial masonry requires restoration techniques that will add additional protection to brick and stone masonry exposed to extreme conditions.
Common Repairs
Common Repairs
Repairs include:
  • Chimney repair
  • Chimney rebuilding
  • Foundation crack repair
  • Mortar repair
  • Tuckpointing
  • Lintel replacement
  • Ivy removal
The materials used and quality of workmanship greatly affect the life of masonry, an otherwise extremely durable form of construction. Even masonry done correctly requires repair overtime to the mortar and joints holding the brick or stone together due to extreme shifts in weather that we have in Chicago.

Quick Tips for Hiring Masonry Companies

Hiring a masonry company for the first time can be an intimidating task. You want to hire someone who will do a good job the first time and be a true expert, without the need to become an expert yourself. Here are some quick tips for hiring a professional quality mason.

Quick Tips for Hiring Masonry Companies

Ask for a referral: Asking friends, neighbors or coworkers whom they worked with and if the work done was quality can be a good place to start. If you’re working with an architect or builder ask them whom they’ve worked with and recommend.

Check their credentials: Ask your mason for their license number and education background. Did they apprentice and where? Where were they trained? How many years of experience do they have?

Check for insurance: Anyone you hire should be insured and bonded to protect you in the case of injury or damage.

Do not accept a quote site unseen: A qualified mason will not be able to estimate work without seeing the property and providing a consultation first. You should request they either see the blue prints from the architect, or view the structure that need repair in person.
